The Power of Self-Motivation: My 3 WHYs and How They Drive Me

Hello my dear reader!

Over the years, people have often asked me, “Eva, who motivates you?”

My answer is simple: I do. While I love inspiring others, I’ve learned that the most powerful motivation comes from within. It’s my WHYs that keep me moving forward, no matter how tough life gets.

But hey, let’s be real—I’m human too. Even the most self-motivated among us sometimes need a little boost, right? On those days when my inner cheerleader needs a break (or maybe a cup of tea and biscuit he he), I love turning to my favourite people and inspirational accounts on Instagram or Facebook. There’s something so uplifting about seeing a motivational quote pop up on your feed or hearing someone share their own story of resilience. It reminds me that we’re all in this together, and a little nudge from the outside can do wonders for the soul.

In this article, I’ll share my personal journey, my 3 WHYs, and practical tips to help you discover your own.

Let’s dive in and get inspired—together!

Conclusion and final thoughts

Why Self-Motivation Is Important

Self-motivation is the secret sauce to success and personal growth. When you rely on your inner drive, you build resilience and confidence, no matter what life throws your way. According to Psychology Today, self-motivated individuals tend to achieve their goals more consistently and feel a deeper sense of fulfilment.

The Power of Understanding Your WHY (Inspired by book Start with WHY)

In Start with WHY, Simon Sinek explains that people and organisations succeed because they know their purpose. Your WHY is your reason for being, your driving force. As Sinek says, “When you start with WHY, everything becomes clearer.” This principle is a game-changer. Once I defined my WHYs, my actions aligned with my purpose, and my motivation skyrocketed.

My 3 WHYs and How They Drive Me Forward

1 To Inspire and Uplift others

I’ve always been passionate about helping others see their potential. There’s something magical about being the spark that lights someone else’s fire. It’s a privilege to know that my words or actions can uplift someone who’s feeling down. This WHY keeps my heart full and my energy high.

My personal example:

I’ll never forget when a friend was stuck in a rut, doubting her ability to switch careers. Over coffee, I shared my own journey of taking small, scary steps toward my goals. A few weeks later, she excitedly told me she’d landed a job in her dream field. Seeing her joy reminded me why I love what I do—it’s not just about my own success; it’s about empowering others to believe in themselves.

2 To Celebrate My Journey and grow

Life has its ups and downs, but every challenge has taught me something valuable. I’ve grown stronger and wiser with each experience. My journey is a testament to resilience, and I cherish every lesson along the way.

My personal example:

Some time ago, I went through a phase of self-doubt. I felt stuck, questioning whether I was on the right path. Instead of giving up, I began journaling my small wins—like finishing a challenging task or learning something new. Those little victories added up, and over time, I realised how much progress I’d made. Looking back now, I see that those moments of growth laid the foundation for the confident person I am today.

3 To Live Authentically and Boldly

This WHY is my compass for living a fearless and fulfilling life. I’ve learned that the best way to connect with others and find joy is by embracing my true self. Being authentic allows me to take risks, stand tall in my values, and chase my dreams unapologetically.

My personal example

Starting my motivational journey online was one of the boldest things I’ve ever done. I was nervous—what if people didn’t resonate with my message? But I knew I had to stay true to my WHY. I put myself out there, and to my surprise, the response was overwhelmingly positive. I received heartfelt messages from people saying my posts brightened their day. That experience taught me that authenticity is my superpower—it’s what allows me to connect, inspire, and thrive.

My 5 Practical Tips to Boost Self-Motivation

1. Apply the Golden Circle

Use Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle (WHY, HOW, WHAT) to align your goals.

Start with your WHY, then map out HOW you’ll achieve it, and define WHAT actions you’ll take.

Example:

If your WHY is to improve your well-being, your HOW might involve regular exercise, and your WHAT could be setting aside 30 minutes for daily yoga.

2.Create a vision board

Visualise your goals with a vision board filled with images, quotes, and symbols that resonate with your WHY. Place it somewhere visible to keep you inspired.

3.Morning motivation ritual

Start your day with a motivational routine. This could include affirmations, meditation, or journaling.

Example: Write down one goal for the day and an affirmation like, “I have the power to achieve anything I set my mind to.”

4. Break Goals into Small Steps

Divide big goals into smaller, manageable steps. Each step you complete will build momentum and boost your confidence.

Example:

Instead of “launch a business,” start with “research 3 potential ideas this week.

5.Practice gratitude daily

End each day by reflecting on three things you’re grateful for. Gratitude shifts your mindset and reminds you of your WHY.

My Latest Research and Resources

Research shows that connecting with your WHY can significantly improve motivation and resilience. A 2023 study from The British Journal of Psychology found that individuals who define their purpose are 40% more likely to achieve their goals.

Your WHYs are your compass, gently steering you through life’s highs and lows.

Take a moment to reflect—what truly matters to you? What fuels your spirit when the road gets tough?

Remember, self-motivation isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress.

Embrace your journey, honour your purpose, and trust that every step, no matter how small, carries meaning.

You’re capable of more than you realise. So pause, breathe, and reconnect with your WHYs—they’re already within you, quietly guiding the way.

Here’s to finding and honouring your WHY’s,

Eva
