Maybe August Is the New January | National Wellness Month and 10 Simple Wellness Habits

"A quiet reflection on the Full Moon, National Wellness Month, and the gentle reminder that it's never too late to begin again."
Some days don't arrive with answers. They don't ask us to hurry, to achieve more, or to become someone different. They simply arrive... quietly... almost like a soft hand resting on our shoulder, inviting us to pause for a little while. The last few days have felt like that for me.
Today is the Full Moon, and although I don't often speak about it here, I've always felt deeply drawn to the quiet rhythms of the universe. The moon, the changing seasons, the stars above us... they've always reminded me that we're part of something far greater than ourselves. Whether you believe the moon influences us or simply see it as a beautiful light in the night sky, I often notice something changing within me around this time. A few days before a Full Moon, and sometimes for a couple of days afterwards, my emotions seem to sit closer to the surface. Everything feels a little more uncovered, a little more honest. Almost as though my heart quietly asks to be heard.
This particular Full Moon has felt soothing, healing, hopeful... and strangely painful all at once. Not painful because something terrible has happened. Not even because of grief.
It's a feeling that's difficult to put into words. Perhaps you've known moments like that too.
Those rare pauses in life when you feel incredibly grateful to be alive, deeply hopeful for what's ahead... yet, at exactly the same time, something brushes against your soul so gently that tears arrive before your mind even understands why. That was me a few evenings ago. Quite unexpectedly, YouTube began playing a song by James Morrison called I Won't Let You Go..
It wasn't just the melody that stopped me, it was the opening words.
"When it's black... take a little time to hold yourself. Take a little time to feel around before it's gone..."
I sat there quietly, letting those words settle inside me. What moved me wasn't sadness.
It was the invitation hidden within them. To stay present, to hold ourselves gently, to allow ourselves to feel what is here before we rush to fix it or push it away. Whenever I hear songs like this, something curious happens. I rarely hear them as love songs between two people. Instead, they seem to come from somewhere beyond words or form. Almost as though life itself... or the universe... or something made only of light... is quietly speaking through them.
Perhaps that's why music has always felt deeply spiritual to me. It reminds me that even in our most tender moments, we are never truly separate from something much bigger than ourselves. And maybe that's one of the greatest gifts these quieter seasons offer us. Not certainty, not answers, simply the gentle reminder to pause... to listen... and to come home to ourselves, one breath at a time.

Perhaps August Is Arriving at Exactly the Right Time
As I sat with those thoughts, something else quietly came to mind. In just a couple of days, we'll welcome August. Many people don't realise that August is recognised as National Wellness Month - a month dedicated to encouraging us to look after our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. When I first learned that, I couldn't help but smile. Because somehow... it feels perfectly placed. We've travelled through half the year already.
Some dreams have grown, some plans have changed, some chapters have surprised us, some of us have achieved things we never imagined. Others may feel a little tired, a little lost, or simply ready for a fresh breath of air. And perhaps that's exactly why August feels so special to me.
January has become famous for new beginnings. New Year's resolutions. New habits. New versions of ourselves. But if I'm honest... January has always felt rather loud. The world wakes up all at once, telling us to move faster, work harder, improve ourselves and somehow transform our lives before the Christmas decorations have even disappeared.
It's exciting... but it can also feel overwhelming. August feels different...The evenings are softer. Nature is still overflowing with life. The sunlight lingers just a little longer. There is something quieter about it all. More spacious, more forgiving. By August, we've already lived enough of the year to know ourselves a little better. We've learned what truly matters.
We've discovered what drains us... and what gently fills us back up again. Perhaps that's why I find August such a beautiful time to begin again. Not because we've failed, not because we need fixing, but because every season quietly offers us another chance to care for ourselves a little more intentionally. Not to become somebody else, simply to become more ourselves.
And maybe that's what wellness has always been about. Not chasing perfection. Not creating a life that looks good from the outside. But creating a life that feels peaceful from the inside. The beautiful part? It doesn't require expensive equipment. It doesn't ask for perfect mornings. It certainly doesn't expect you to overhaul your life overnight.Sometimes wellness looks wonderfully ordinary:
A slower walk before breakfast.
One extra glass of water.
Choosing to stretch your body after sitting too long.
Watching birds from your kitchen window.
Listening to the rain.
Sitting beside the sea.
Watching sheep peacefully graze on a hillside, as I often find myself doing with the biggest smile on my face :)
Making a quiet cup of tea and drinking it without scrolling your phone.
Taking five slow breaths before responding instead of reacting.
None of these moments cost a penny. Yet they have the power to gently change the way we experience an entire day. And perhaps that's the greatest reminder National Wellness Month offers us. That looking after ourselves doesn't have to be complicated.Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness we offer ourselves become the strongest foundations for the life we're trying to build. Who knows... Maybe one gentle habit repeated over the next thirty-one days could become something that stays with you long after August quietly slips into September.
"What's the Difference Between Wellness and Self-Care?"
A friend asked me something recently that made me stop and think. "Eva... aren't wellness and self-care really the same thing?" It's such a good question. The truth is... they're very closely connected, but they're not exactly the same. I like to think of it this way..
Wellness is the bigger picture. It's your overall sense of wellbeing. Not just your physical health, but your emotional health too. Your sleep, your energy, your relationships, your purpose, your thoughts. How connected you feel to yourself, how peacefully you move through your days. Wellness isn't about perfection. It's about creating a life that supports you instead of constantly draining you. Self-care, on the other hand, is how we nurture that wellness every single day. It's the small, often ordinary choices we make that quietly say, "I matter too." Making a nourishing meal. Drinking another glass of water or going for a walk. Stretching your body after sitting at your desk. Turning your phone off for an hour. Meditating for five minutes.
Watching the sunrise, listening to birdsong. Sitting beside the sea, or watching sheep peacefully wander across a hillside.
None of those moments are dramatic. Most of them don't cost a thing, yet together, they gently shape the life we're living. I think that's something we've almost forgotten. Somewhere along the way, we've been taught that looking after ourselves has to be expensive. A luxury retreat, the newest gadget, another subscription, another product promising to change our lives. But some of the most healing moments I've ever experienced have been completely free..
Watching waves roll towards the shore. Walking through woodland after rain.
Feeling sunshine on my face. Sharing laughter with someone I love. Making a quiet cup of tea. Looking up at the stars. Sometimes simply sitting in silence long enough to hear my own thoughts again. Nature has always reminded me that the most important things rarely ask us to spend money, only attention.
Perhaps that's why mindfulness has become such an important part of my own life.
Not because it helps me escape the world, but because it helps me return to it.
To notice what's already here, to slow down enough to appreciate ordinary moments before they quietly become memories.
If you've never tried mindfulness before, please don't imagine it has to look a certain way.
You don't need to sit cross-legged on a mountain, you don't need perfect silence, you don't even need an hour of spare time. Mindfulness simply begins the moment you become fully present. When you truly taste your morning coffee. When you notice the breeze against your skin. When you pause to watch clouds drifting across the sky.
Presence is where mindfulness begins. And perhaps that's where wellness quietly begins too. Not someday, not when life becomes easier. But today... in one small moment... one gentle choice... and one mindful breath at a time.

10 Gentle Invitations for August
If you're wondering where to begin this National Wellness Month, may I gently offer a few ideas? Please don't try them all at once. Choose one. Maybe two. Let them become part of your everyday life before adding another. Small, consistent steps almost always take us further than giant leaps we can't sustain. Here are ten gentle invitations that are beautifully simple, supported by science, and available to every one of us.
1. Drink One More Glass of Water Than Yesterday
Sometimes wellness begins with something wonderfully ordinary. Even mild dehydration can affect our energy, concentration and mood. Keep a bottle nearby. Take a sip before your morning coffee. Let drinking water become a small act of kindness towards yourself, rather than another task to tick off.
2. Step Outside Every Day
You don't have to climb a mountain. Simply stepping outdoors for twenty or thirty minutes can help lower stress, improve mood and support your overall health. Some of my favourite moments have happened on quiet footpaths, beside the sea or simply watching clouds drift overhead. Nature rarely asks anything from us. Yet somehow, it always gives something back.
3. Let Morning Light Find You
If you can, spend a few minutes outside soon after waking. Morning daylight helps regulate our body's natural clock, supports better sleep and gently reminds our minds that a new day has begun. Sometimes the simplest medicine has been shining above us all along.
4. Breathe Before You Rush
Five slow breaths. That's all. Research shows that slowing our breathing can help calm our nervous system and reduce feelings of stress. It's amazing how often we search for peace somewhere far away... when sometimes it's waiting in our very next breath.
5. Move Because Your Body Deserves Joy
Movement doesn't have to mean punishment. It doesn't have to be about burning calories or chasing a certain appearance. Dance in your kitchen. Stretch while the kettle boils. Go for a gentle walk. Cycle with your children. Lift weights. Run if it makes you smile.
Your body was created to move - not because it has to earn rest, but because movement is one of the ways we celebrate being alive.
6. Create One Screen-Free Moment Every Day
Perhaps it's while drinking your tea. Perhaps during your evening walk. Perhaps the first thirty minutes after waking. Our minds weren't designed to absorb endless information every waking moment. Sometimes switching off our screens allows us to switch ourselves back on.
7. Notice Three Good Things
Before bed tonight, ask yourself, "What quietly made today beautiful?" Maybe someone smiled at you. Maybe the rain smelled lovely. Maybe your child laughed. Maybe your cup of tea stayed warm long enough to enjoy. Our brains naturally notice problems first. Practising gratitude gently teaches them to notice goodness too.
8. Do One Unexpected Kind Thing
Kindness doesn't only change the person receiving it. It changes us as well.
A thoughtful message. Holding a door. Checking in on a friend. Leaving food and water out for wildlife during warm weather ( Yes, I still do feed my pigeon friend and squerls :) ) Tiny acts of kindness often leave the biggest footprints.
9. Spend Ten Minutes Simply Noticing Nature
Watch birds. Listen to waves. Sit beneath a tree. Notice wildflowers growing where nobody planted them. Or perhaps, like me... find yourself smiling at sheep peacefully grazing in a field. Studies continue to show that time spent in nature can help reduce stress and restore our attention. Maybe that's because nature never asks us to be anyone other than ourselves.
10. Finish the Day with One Gentle Question
Instead of asking, "Did I do enough today?" Try asking, "Did I care for myself today?" The answers may surprise you. Because wellness isn't built in one extraordinary day. It's built quietly... through hundreds of ordinary ones.
How to Let August Stay With You
Here's something I've learned over the years. Knowing what to do is rarely the difficult part.
Most of us already know that drinking more water, moving our bodies, sleeping well and spending time outdoors are good for us. The real challenge isn't starting. It's continuing... gently enough that those little habits become part of who we are. If there's one thing I'd love you to remember after reading this, it's this: You do not have to change your whole life this August. You only need to keep one small promise to yourself. Start smaller than you think you should. So small that it almost feels impossible to fail. One glass of water.
A ten-minute walk. Five slow breaths before getting out of the car. Reading one page instead of ten. Watching one sunset instead of rushing home. The smaller the habit, the easier it becomes to repeat. And repetition is where change quietly begins.
Try connecting your new habit to something you already do each day. Drink a glass of water while the kettle boils. Stretch after brushing your teeth. Step outside before checking your phone. Little anchors like these gently remind your brain without relying on motivation alone. Please don't expect perfection. Life will always interrupt us sometimes.
You'll miss a day. Perhaps even a week. That doesn't mean you've failed. It simply means you're human. Never let one missed day convince you to give up completely. Speak to yourself the way you would speak to someone you love. With patience, with encouragement, with kindness. And every now and then... pause long enough to notice how far you've already come.
We are so good at noticing what still needs improving. Yet we rarely stop to celebrate the quiet ways we've already grown. Growth isn't always loud. Sometimes it arrives disguised as choosing water instead of another coffee. Taking one deep breath instead of one more worry. Those little moments matter more than we realise.
Maybe that's why I needed to write today.. This Full Moon reminded me that even when our hearts feel tender... we are still growing. Even when emotions arrive unexpectedly...
they are often carrying something worth listening to. Maybe August doesn't need to become another month you simply get through. Maybe it could become the month you gently come home to yourself. One quiet walk, one mindful breath, one sunrise, one conversation, one act of kindness, one small choice at a time. Because wellness isn't something we achieve. It's something we practise, day by day. Moment by moment.
Choice by choice.
And perhaps the most beautiful journeys never begin with a giant leap. They begin with one tiny promise... that we finally decide to keep.
If this August becomes the month you choose to care for yourself just a little more gently, I'd love to hear what one small promise you're making to yourself. Sometimes sharing it out loud is the very first step towards making it real.
With love,
Eva

Stay a Little Longer
If today's reflection spoke to you, perhaps you'd enjoy spending a little more time here.
Latest YouTube Reflection Some reflections stay with us long after we've finished reading or listening. In fact, a few people have told me they found themselves reaching for a notebook while listening to this one. Who Are You Trying to Impress?
It's a gentle invitation to pause and explore the quiet ways we shape ourselves around other people's expectations - and what might happen if we stopped trying to earn our worth and simply remembered who we already are. If you've ever felt the pressure to perform, explain yourself, or seek approval, I hope this reflection offers you a safe space to breathe, reflect, and perhaps see yourself with a little more kindness.
From Last Week's Reflection If you're in a quieter, more reflective place today, you may also find comfort in reading: The Call That Was Never Answered A deeply personal reflection on grief, love, and the conversations that remain in our hearts long after someone is gone. It's about the words we never had the chance to say - and how remembering can become part of healing.
Thank you for sharing a little of your day with me. I hope you leave feeling calmer, lighter, and reminded that you never have to walk this journey alone.
With love,Eva
